Former Executive Director, Charleston Legal Access

Lana Kleiman is the Director of Philanthropy for a private family office, where she leads philanthropic strategy and grantmaking. She oversees the full lifecycle of giving, including due diligence, strategic partnerships, grantmaking, and impact evaluation across the family’s philanthropic priorities.

Previously, Lana served as Executive Director of Charleston Legal Access (CLA), South Carolina’s first and only nonprofit sliding-scale law firm. During her tenure, she led the organization’s growth and expansion, increasing access to affordable, high-quality legal services for individuals and families who did not qualify for free legal aid but could not afford traditional market-rate attorneys.

Lana began her legal career as a litigation associate at DLA Piper in New York City after graduating from Brooklyn Law School. She discovered her passion for expanding access to justice through pro bono work and later joined New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), where she worked in both the Immigrant Protection Unit and Family Law Unit, representing survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trauma. She also coordinated Project Eden, an initiative focused on raising awareness of domestic violence within the Orthodox Jewish community.

Lana has served in leadership and advisory roles across the legal and nonprofit sectors, including on the Steering Committee for South Carolina’s Statewide Civil Legal Needs Assessment and on the Board of My Sister's House. She also serves as an advisor to the Above the Line Network (ATLN), a collaborative effort focused on expanding legal access for underserved communities.

Lana is a 2019 Riley Fellow through Furman University’s Diversity Leaders Initiative, recipient of the 2021 Trident United Way Nonprofit Leader of the Year Award, and was named a Leader in Law in 2022 by South Carolina Lawyers Weekly. She is also a member of the Liberty Fellowship Class of 2025.
